How can I tell if I need a new mattress?

Trust your body! If you're waking up to little aches and pains (some that might last all day), it's generally a good indicator that your body isn't getting the proper rest and support that it needs throughout the night.

How long should my Mattress last?

The Better Sleep Council advises consumers to buy the highest quality bedding they can afford, then replace old bedding every 8-10 years. After this many years, even the best bedding may no longer provide the best comfort and support.

Can I compare my old mattress to mattresses available today?

No, the design and manufacturing of bedding has changed dramatically--even over the last 10 years! Innerspring technology has improved, new upholstery materials are being used every day and comfort choices have been expanded to give consumers a greater selection! Today's foundations offer more durability, from the steel spans to the torsion modules that are built into most Englander foundations.

How do I know a mattress is made of all new materials?

Be sure to check the label!  Mattresses returned to retail stores by dissatisfied customers are sent back to the manufacturers. In many states it is illegal for mattresses to be resold by the retailer.

Should I replace my foundation when purchasing a new mattress?

A good foundation is as important as a good mattress! It acts much like a large shock absorber, taking a lot of the nightly wear and tear. And it contributes to your comfort and support. Don't put a new mattress on an old foundation. When you select the mattress, purchase its companion foundation--the two are designed to work best together. Sealy engineers invented "foundation support" in the 1970's, which sets the standard for today's bedding.

How do I shop for a mattress?

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you can easily remove for lying down. Take your time!! You can't judge support and comfort by sitting on an edge or lying down for just a few seconds. Lie on the bed the way that you sleep, and if you sleep with a partner, take them with you to decide if you'll be fighting for space. Don't be shy! Shop at a store that you know and trust--and read as much information about the bed available. Remember, buy the best bed that you can afford--you can always find "bargain bedding", but it's no bargain if you can't get a good night's sleep!

How do I avoid body impressions in my mattress?

Body indentations are a normal occurrence in your new mattress and indicate that the upholstery layers are conforming to your body's individual contours. To help minimize body impressions, please turn your mattress every two weeks in the first three months; then, once every two months thereafter.

How and why do I rotate my bedding?

Following the full rotation cycle illustrated below will ensure that your mattress is rotated properly. Please complete Rotation Cycle #1 after two weeks of ownership, rotation Cycle #2 after 4 weeks, and Rotation cycle #3 after 6 weeks. Continue this process once every two months thereafter, throughout the life of your sleep set.

Warning: Do not attempt to turn mattress by yourself. This may cause personal injury or damage to your mattress.

How do I clean my mattress?

Keeping your mattress clean is simple with the use of a protective mattress pad, especially if children use the bed. Vacuuming is the only recommended cleaning method. If you must clean a stain, use mild soap with cold water and apply lightly! Don't ever soak a mattress or foundation, and don't use dry cleaning fluid of any type on your mattress--these chemicals could damage some of the comfort and upholstery materials.

Why are some of today's beds so thick? My sheets don't fit!

Today's mattresses are manufactured with much more padding upholstery and comfort layers than in days gone by! Many consumers prefer the plush and ultra-plush comfort that these thick mattresses provide. You can find deep-pocketed sheets in almost any retail store today--along with any sheet set that contains a 200 thread count.

Should I be concerned about bedding height?

It depends on the design of your bed frame and your personal preference! For consumers who don't want the extra height that comes with today's bedding, Donahue's offers a "Low Profile Foundation," cutting the height of the foundation by up to 3 full inches! A low-rise bed frame can also reduce the overall height of your mattress surface. In addition, most stores also offer "low profile frames," which also reduce overall height

Sleep Tips

Having trouble sleeping? Here are some tips compiled by the experts to help you get a better night's sleep.

Calm Down Before Bed
Try unwinding and eliminating stress before going to bed. Create a bedtime routine that makes you comfortable. If you're concerned about your big day tomorrow, keep a pad and pencil by your bed and make yourself a to-do list. This will put your mind at ease and allow you to sleep better. Try a warm bath or calm music. If you're lucky, get a massage from a friend!

Caffeine
Caffeine is a known stimulant and the last thing you want in your system when you're trying to sleep. It can be found in coffee, teas, sodas, chocolate and certain medications, including nasal sprays. Be aware of your caffeine intake and limit it to the early hours if you must have it at all. Late-night trips to the coffeehouse may be fun, but they'll wreak havoc on your ability to sleep. Try decaf!

Snoring
Snoring can often be reduced by using additional pillows to raise your head and shoulders. Also, try sleeping on your side rather than your back, as people tend to snore more on their back.

Darkness
Have your room dark. Your body is accustomed to sleeping in the dark, so even if you work the night shift and sleep during the day, trick your body into thinking it's nighttime by making the room dark.

Quiet
Quiet or quiet sounds are essential for quality sleep. Fall asleep to music only if it is non-distracting and uninterrupted by radio announcers who can scare you out of an otherwise good sleep! Try sleeping with a fan, humidifier or air conditioner on. The low humming sound can be quite soothing. Heavy drapes can stifle outside noise, and the telephone ringer can always be turned off!

Mattress and Foundation
Since you will spend 1/3 of your life in your bed, a quality innerspring mattress and foundation are the most cost-effective purchases you can make. Studies have shown that an innerspring mattress and foundation create the least tension, strain and muscle fatigue on the lower back, therefore giving you a better night's sleep and allowing you to wake up refreshed and feeling great. Quality innerspring mattresses come in four comfort levels: Firm, Cushion FirmŽ, Plush and Ultra Plush. Consult with a bedding expert in a quality bedding department or store for the bedding set that meets your individual needs.

Television

Eliminate violent or emotionally stimulating shows late in the evening. If you really want to watch them, tape them and watch them the next morning as you prepare for your day

Sleep Position
Try and avoid sleeping on your stomach, as that position forces your back's natural "S" curve into an unnatural arch. If you sleep on your back, a pillow under the knees will help maintain your proper spinal curve. The most natural position is the one you learned before you were born, the fetal (side) position.

Sleep Programs
If you've tried everything to sleep better and nothing is working, you might want to consider a sleep program and/or seminar. A good resource is the "Better Sleep" program from Richard S. Shane, PhD. Information is available through the Better Sleep Institute, 93985 Wonderland Hill Avenue, Boulder, Colorado 80304.
